2 Post Lift FAQ's

What concrete thickness do I need for a 2-post lift?
Most 2-post lifts require a minimum of 100mm (4") of reinforced concrete, though heavier-duty models may specify more. The slab must be fully cured before installation — typically 28 days. Always check the manufacturer's specification sheet for the exact requirement, as this will also affect your anchor bolt sizing.
Do I need to bolt down a 2-post lift, and how does it stay stable?
Yes, The 2 post lift is bolted directly into the concrete floor, and the two columns work together under load to keep the vehicle stable. The hydraulic system is synchronised across both arms, and mechanical safety locks engage automatically at height so the vehicle cannot drop if pressure is lost.
What's the difference between a 2-post and a 4-post lift?
A 2-post lift picks up the vehicle by its chassis or sill points, giving full access to the underside, wheels, and suspension — ideal for servicing, MOT work, and repairs. A 4-post lift drives the vehicle onto runways, making it better suited to storage or gearbox work. For workshop productivity, a 2-post is the more versatile day-to-day tool.
Can a 2-post lift be installed outside?
Technically yes, but it's not recommended without weatherproofing provisions. Exposed hydraulic components and electrical systems will degrade faster in outdoor conditions. If outside installation is unavoidable, look for models rated for external use and factor in additional maintenance requirements. Most workshops opt for an internal or covered bay.
